Sacla’, those irresistibly Italian food people, are proud sponsors of this year’s Food Academy, which is bigger and better than ever before. Not only is there a packed programme of events going on for you to watch in the demonstration kitchen area, but also a rolling programme of events in the Baking, Fruit and Dairy Tents which children of all ages can take part in. Come along and get cooking! There’s something new for Mums and Dads too – come and unwind at the "Sacla’ Irresistibly Italian Tent" situated beside the Food Academy.

Space is limited for all demonstrations and workshops. No reservations - first come first served.


Saturday 20 September

Sacla’ Food Academy Demonstration Kitchen

10.30am -11.30am
‘Best Sausage Maker in Monmouthshire’ competition – Ruth Tudor, Trealy Farm Charcuterie

Come and watch Monmouth Comprehensive School, Chepstow School, Caldicot School and King Henry VIII School, Abergavenny make sausages to compete for the sizzling sausage title! (Don’t forget to come back for the judging
later in the day!)

12.00pm – 1.00pm
Muffin Magic – Jeanette Orrey

Interactive demonstration by award-winning ex-dinner lady and School Meals Policy Adviser to the Soil Association, Jeanette Orrey. Come and see, help and then taste some eclectic flavours from muffins flavoured by Sacla’ pesto, to chocolate and beetroot!

1.30pm – 2.00pm
Judging – ‘Best Sausage Maker in Monmouthshire 2008’

With Richard Ehrlich, author of The Perfect… and the forthcoming Green Kitchen Book and Clare Blampied, Managing Director, Sacla UK. Cheer on your favourite team and find out which school
has won the title.

2.30pm – 3.15pm
Stirrin’ Stuff – Fiona Bird

Interactive demonstration with previous MasterChef finalist. Come and help her cook up some healthy, fair-trade recipes.

Baking Tent

Go dotty about dough – Simon Michaels,
Wild Yeast Bakery Courses, Forest of Dean

Learn the story of bread and knead, shape and flavour your own bread. Come back 2 hours later to collect it fresh from the oven.

3.30pm – 5.00pm
Sugar and Spice and All Things Nice – Jane Lewis, Sugarloaf Mountain Cake Company

Ever used a piping bag? Come and try icing biscuits or cup cakes with fabulous coloured icing with the help of a professional biscuit and cake icer. (Also on Sunday, 12.30pm – 1.30pm)


Dairy Tent

Go Utterly Buttery – Usk Rural Life Museum

Children love the satisfaction of making their own butter the old fashioned way. Get those jars shaking and take your pat of butter home with you.

The Story of Yoghurt – Rachel’s Organic

Learn about how yoghurt is made, and come and have a taste from the award-winning range from Rachel’s Organic.

Come and learn all about how cheese is made, what it looks like at different stages of the making process, and have a taste of the wonderful cheeses produced by Wales’ leading farmer-owned dairy co-operative, South Caernarfon Creameries.

Abergavenny Young Firefighters
Fruit-astic activities going on at different times throughout the day including smoothie making, fruit kebab making and apple juicing. Try your hand at the longest apple peel competition too and win an authentic Italian Sacla’ goodie bag! (Also all day Sunday with Monmouthshire Scouts)

Sacla’ Food Academy Demonstration Kitchen

From Field to Flour – with Matt Scott, Bacheldre Watermill

Interactive milling demonstration. Come and see and handle the different varieties of grain that make your daily bread and watch the grain being turned into flour.

Food Festival Challenge between Monmouthshire’s Youth Centres

Teams race around collecting a variety of ingredients from stallholders, and then dash back and cook them with Cyrus Todiwala MBE, award winning chef and owner of Café Spice Namasté and Barny Haughton, Chef-proprietor of Bordeaux Quay in Bristol. Judged by Tom Parker Bowles, food writer, TV presenter and columnist.

1.45pm – 2.45pm
Perk up with Pesto & Pasta – Laura Santin & Gillian Riley

Laura runs the Santini restaurant in London’s Belgravia and being half Italian is an expert on all things Italian. Gillian is a food writer who’s expertise is food in art. Together they will demonstrate how to make pasta the authentic way and talk about its history. Some lucky children in the audience will get to help out!

Get kneading, rolling and covering your mini-pizza in any of the authentic Italian Sacla’ sauces, pesto and antipasti. Come back half an hour later to collect it fresh from the oven!
