Food Academy: 17-18 September 2011

The Food Academy takes place at The Castle (our family-friendly venue) over the Festival weekend (17 & 18 September). Its role is to inspire a new generation of cooks to try something new with a mouth-watering series of workshops. Children can take part for free on a first-come, first-served basis. The Castle is one of the venues which can be accessed within our 5-Venue Stroller Tickets section. Remember, we offer free entry to all children under the age of 16 if accompanied by an adult.
Children's Cookery Competition – Grow Your Own Ploughmans
The Children's Cookery competition is at the heart of the Food Academy. Although the event is some time away, hundreds of local secondary school children (and their teachers!) are hard at work facing the challenges of this year's programme of activity.
The competition gets children to engage with the whole process of food production. This year they are even 'baking their own lawn' – planting and nurturing wheat seed to use for baking their own bread. This ties in with Sustain's 'Real Bread' campaign.
One team from each school will present a soup and a Welsh Ploughman's with side salad and chutney. It's quite some task, pulling every element of this meal together! They are responsible for growing everything – from tomatoes to runner beans.
As part of the learning process, schools will visit garden centres /restaurants and talk to growers and chefs. The whole project culminates with a cook-off between four selected schools at the Children's Food Academy over the Festival weekend.
News from Monmouthshire Comprehensive School
Pupils from Monmouthshire Comprehensive have got off to a flying start! Here are some pictures that were taken on-site recently showing their embryo garden, runner beans and their auto-waterer – which will be used during the summer holidays. More pics will be added shortly.

News from Chepstow Comprehensive School
Chepstow held their annual Food Festival on July 14 to crown their winning team to come forward to the finals of the Grow Your Own Ploughmans competition. Here are some of the pupils planting wheat seeds, and tending to their veggie patch. All pupils who took part in the grow your own ploughmans have been entered into the CREST awards bronze category this year.
