After a degree in agriculture and 10 years working in African agriculture, Bob returned to the UK in 1985 to work as an international agriculture consultant. In 1988 he established a pioneering and award-winning organic meat business in the Welsh Borders, and later developed a farmers’ marketing group to supply supermarkets with organic beef and lamb, with 400 members across Britain. After publication of his acclaimed book ‘Much Ado About Mutton’ in 2014, he managed the National Sheep Association’s (NSA) mutton campaign. He is co-author of the Sustainable Food Trust’s (SFT) report (‘A Good Life and a Good Death’, Feb 2018) on the decline of the UK’s smaller abattoirs. In 1999 he co-authored a similar report, which led to him serving on two Government Task Forces. This halted the decline in smaller abattoirs for a while, but the crisis has now returned. Currently Policy Advisor to the SFT and the ‘Campaign for Local Abattoirs’ (www.localabattoirs.com) which is run jointly with The National Craft Butchers, and which has led to the current discussions with government. He is also working with the NSA on developing the market for UK native breeds of sheep – ‘UK Heritage Sheep’, which will be launched soon.
