How Monmouthshire Lost 100s of Acres of Horticulture

How Monmouthshire Lost Hundreds of Acres of Horticulture… and how do we get it back?

  • Date: Sun, 21st Sep
  • Time: 11:30am - 12:15pm
  • Venue: Local & Vocal Stage - Castle Grounds

Local environmental journalist Patrick Hannay is joined by market gardener Rob Proctor (Tir Awen, Gilwern) to outline the achievements of the Welsh Land Settlements activity in Monmouthshire (1936 – 1961), which gave rise to 250 acres of horticulture around Abergavenny. They explore how and why those earlier horticultural businesses grew and then faded away, and any lessons we can learn to revive this valuable tradition. In such different times, is it possible to build up a similar horticultural capacity again, providing large parts of the community with fresh fruit and vegetables, grown on our doorstep? Join us to find out.

Tir Awen

Rob and Zoe Proctor have grown Tir Awen from a single sack of potatoes (gifted by a neighbour) to a successful family run market garden lying on the edge of Gilwern, in the Clydach Gorge. They provide fresh, seasonal veg boxes to the local area through a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) approach.
